Dr. Hicks

Dr. Hicks

Dr. Hicks began working at Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital while he was a student at Copley High School.  Then, he continued working at the hospital while also attending The Ohio State University.  While there, Dr. Hicks received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science then went on to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1995.  He immediately joined Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital as an associate, and soon after became the practice owner.

He credits his mentor, Dr. Alessio, who founded Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital in 1965, with teaching him the importance of meticulous attention to detail and excellent communication skills.  Dr. Hicks focuses on all aspects of small animal medicine, including wellness and preventive care, internal medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.  “My goal is to provide each and every patient with everything they need, but only what they need to keep them happy and healthy, while providing pet owners with exceptional service as I strive to solve all of their pet care concerns.”

When not at the hospital, Dr. Hicks enjoys spending time at home with his wife of more than 20 years and their pet dog and two cats.  When time permits, he is also an avid fisherman, a hobby he shares with his son and close friends.

Dr. Skrainka

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Dr. Skrainka completed her undergraduate training at Miami University (Oxford, OH) with a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, completing her clinical year at The University of Illinois.

She spent two years working at a large, multi-doctor practice in St. Louis before joining Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital as an associate veterinarian in July 2018.

“My approach to veterinary medicine is largely impacted by my father and by an early veterinary mentor,” she says. Her father is a practicing pediatric emergency room physician and tremendously impacted her career path. “At a young age, my Dad instilled a life-long love of medicine and a genuine desire to treat those unable to advocate for themselves,” she says. Dr. Skrainka credits an early veterinary mentor for demonstrating the positive impact of a strong doctor-patient-client bond and for crafting her communication skills. With a focus in primary care and preventative medicine, Dr. Skrainka explains, “My veterinary mission is to exceed the expectation of patient care and client communication. I value the opportunity to ease owner’s worries, to provide reassurance when appropriate, and to clearly communicate the answers to their most difficult questions.”

While at home, Dr. Skrainka enjoys spending time with her beloved dog, Evee. The “Coconut Retriever” was rescued off the island streets of St. Kitts.  She also enjoys recreational figure skating, watching hockey games, yoga, and learning to cook.
