Dr. Hicks, Veterinarian
Dr. Hicks began working at Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital while he was a student at Copley High School. Then, he continued working at the hospital while also attending The Ohio State University. While there, Dr. Hicks received a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science then went on to become a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. He immediately joined Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital as an associate, and soon after became the practice owner.
He credits his mentor, Dr. Alessio, a veterinarian who founded Akron Medina Veterinary Hospital in 1965, with teaching him the importance of meticulous attention to detail and excellent communication skills. Dr. Hicks focuses on all aspects of small animal medicine, including wellness plans and preventive care, internal medicine, teeth cleaning, and soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
“My goal is to provide each and every patient with everything they need, but only what they need to keep them happy and healthy, while providing pet owners with exceptional service as I strive to solve all of their pet care concerns.”
When not at the hospital, Dr. Hicks enjoys spending time at home with his wife of more than 20 years and their pet dog and two cats. When time permits, he is also an avid fisherman, a hobby he shares with his son and close friends.
Sue, Pet Groomer
Sue moved to Ohio in 1998 from a small town in Oklahoma. She gave her first “haircut” to her mother’s poodle at age 10, and her career took off from there! Previously, she has enjoyed dog handling in 4H and has been working in the “dog world” ever since. Sue joined the Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort team in 2003. She states that it has been the most wonderful job and a pleasure to work with all of her special dogs and clients—with room in her heart for many more!
Sally, Veterinary Technician
Sally always had a passion for animals when she was growing up. In 2014, Sally decided to pursue a degree as a veterinary technician at Stautzenberger College. She came to Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital in November 2015 and states "best decision I ever made. Now I get to pursue my career and dreams in a place I love."
Laura, Veterinary Technician
Laura came to the Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort staff in 2020 as one of our Veterinary Technicians. She graduated from Stautzenberger College in 2008 with her degree. Laura’s love for animals started at a very young age and in her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and her own pets.
Katie, Veterinary Technician
Katie has always loved animals from the time she was little, she recalls always wanting to pet any dog that passed by. In 2014 Katie decided to go to Tri-C Community College to get her degree to become a Veterinary Technician. She graduated from school in 2017 and obtained her license shortly after. Katie has since worked at Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort as a Technician since January of 2018. She loves working closely with our clients and their animals in order to get them the help that they need.
Brittany, Customer Service Representative
Brittany has always had animals throughout her life including dogs, cats and horses! She was previously a horse trainer and has a degree in Equestrian Studies and Public Relations from the University of Findlay. Brittany joined Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort in the Fall of 2019 as a Customer Service Representative . Brittany loves coming to work everyday to help the clients and their pets get exceptional care!
Mariena, Customer Service Representative
Mariena has known ever since she was little that she was going to spend her life helping animals any way that she could. She grew up in rural Montana helping her grandmother foster countless kittens, and volunteered for local shelters whenever she could. Mariena joined the team at Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort at the beginning of 2020 as a Customer Service Representative, and is so happy she gets to spend her time helping clients and pets however she can.
Jessie, Pet Resort Attendant
Jessie has always loved all animals, which made her decide to join Akron-Medina Veterinary Hospital & Pet Resort in March as a Pet Resort Attendant! Her love for animals has led her to further her education in animal care and she started taking classes at Stratford Career Institute in September of 2019. Jessie looks forward to coming to work everyday to help care for the animals. She really doesn’t feel like this is a job because of how much she loves what she does!
